Baby Ruth

This year Nashville Animal Control has had a good number of pigs, all of which we have picked up and vetted and placed (or kept).

I first met Baby Ruth the day I picked up Lollipop, a tiny sweet baby who had everyone wrapped around her little hoof.    Baby Ruth raced over to the side of the pen and tried to bite through the wire.

“She’s a really bad biter”, the Animal Control Handler commented.

“I can see that”, I replied.

The next week I went back to pick her up, her 30 days were up and she could be released.

Oh, well, I thought, she and Julian, the other biter, can form a biting team.

Once home I let her out to roam the yard which is the first step of being integrated into the sanctuary. Exposure to a small group of pigs to see what the personality is like.

Surprisingly, she never offered to bite or showed any behavior except warmth and affection. And to this day, she has been a sweet and loving pig. Apparently the fear over being lost/ dumped and penned up was her problem, not her basic personality.
