Momo, Noah, Daisy and Reba, & babies |
Chattanooga, TN
This project gave a whole new meaning to "hands on", with my young friend/ periodic helper Nisa and I traveling long days to catch and transport pigs to the University for surgeries, and keeping pigs in our hospital after surgeries and for medical treatments.
We received a desperate call from a woman in Chattanooga who had five adult pigs and a litter of babies. She was getting a divorce and didn’t know what to do with them.. Keeping boys and girls had been impossible and now she had both piglets and expected pregnancies, an immanent move to a new location with no fencing.
We drove to Chattanooga and picked up the pigs and took them to UT for spaying/neutering.
The yard was a mud pit, the pigs were smart and we labored a while before getting them all loaded.
Unfortunately, one adult pig was lost during the surgery. She was pregnant.
All of the babies (and their mama) were spayed and neutered when they were old enough. Mama spent 3 weeks in our sanctuary hospital getting over a bacterial infection she had when she came in.
. Fencing was also set up for the piggies at the woman’s new home..
Catching and Loading the pigs in the muddy yard was a challenge for Nisa and I. .. a few pieces of plywood and our pusher board made the job possible.
Dawn, the owner (in blue) and her Dad assisted in the
process.
