2003- Penny
Algood, TN
Penny was over a year old and had been kept chained all her life. With only a small area to reach from the chain she was only able to graze when her owner allowed her loose on the lawn. Her house was a bit small for her so she slept out in a pile of hay under an open carport. She broke her chain and went wandering when in heat. Fortunately, she was never attacked by dogs on her trips about town or while she was chained.
The owner loves her pig and was not being deliberately unkind. She knew no different having been given no care information from the breeder. Like so many of its ilk, this local petting zoo in Cookeville, Tennessee, breeds all kinds of helpless animals and sells them to anyone passing by with no care information nor concern if the animals live or die. They break no laws except those of common decency and ethics.. so there is little that can be done about their practices. They have since then stopped selling pigs.
Penny was just one.. fortunate in that her owner eventually located us and we quickly fixed her a pen and provided education in housing and the necessity of grazing. Her owner built her a nice new house. She has been spayed as well. She will have a happy life now.. and a much healthier one as well. Her owner has been so pleased to have good care information and be part of the piggy community that she has joined our volunteers! Everyone is happy now, especially Penny who is free to root under the trees and walk around at will.
